#Podbyky Season Finale “Meet Me At The Alter” w/Chris & Bri

I’m just going to start off by saying Podcasting is Life. When I first decided I wanted to do a podcast, I wrote a list of things that I wanted to discuss with other people. How could they impart their knowledge on me to help me to grow? To help my audience grow? I wanted to talk to everyone about everything that I cared about from Cultural Appropriation to Entrepreneurship. But one of the most pending questions I had, is when it came to one of the most important relationships in life…MARRIAGE.

I want to get married. I’ve wanted to since I could remember. My friend Nikki and I planned our weddings in a binder when we were 12. I love the idea of partnership and growth. Traveling, buying a home, raising kids, and growing old. I love the idea of having someone to always come home to, talk to, and share a bed with so I don’t have to be afraid of the dark anymore. But these are all idealistic characteristics of marriage and while it’s nice to dream about, the reality is 50% of marriages end in divorce. Therefore, I needed to know the gritty truth about marriage as well. The reality of marriage. What does it take to make it work? What qualities do I need to possess? What’s the hardest sacrifice you would have to make as a spouse? I knew just who to call to answer some of these questions.

Chris and Bri are twenty-somethings who got married right after college. They were young but they made it work and are in it for the long run (aka FOREVER).  It was important that I talked to them because God is at the center of their relationship. I can arguably say that Christian courting is harder than regular dating. I say this because of the standards christians have to uphold themselves to. The temptations that they have to fight off, IT’S HARD! But Chris and Bri overcame those challenges and their love story is inspiring. In spite of all of that, I knew they would also keep it real. They are super authentic and would be transparent about what it takes to make a marriage work.

Fun Facts:

  • This is one of the first podcasts I ever shot. You can actually tell, I was super nervous.
  • This podcast was shot twice. The first one was so good, I almost cried while interviewing them. Then while I was editing, it deleted into oblivion and I had to make that embarrassing call to Chris and Bri, like “Heyyyyyyyyyyyy, now what had happened was….”
  • The second podcast that we shot (you’re listening to Take Two) was just as amazing as the first – thanks guys.
  • When we shot again, Chris was sick. Sorry Chris!
  • Chris & Bri are the most gracious couple. They are super supportive of me and I appreciate their light, their story, their authenticity. They are unapologetically themselves and I love them for that.
  • This podcast is like SOUL FOOD. I learned so much about myself while listening to these two. I learned that there’s a lot of stuff I need to work on as I prepare for my life-long partner in crime.

What an experience podcasting has been. I love interviewing people. I love hearing people’s stories and trajectories. I love learning about what people had to go through to get to where they are today. It’s been an eye-opening experience and it has taught me so much about myself and what I am capable of.

#Podbyky Epi 15 Stilettos & Screwdrivers w/Toni Robinson

IMG_0959

This podcast, which is intentionally being dropped on International Women’s Day celebrates Women In Technology. I sit down with “Wonder Woman” Toni Robinson Founder and CEO of Stilettos & Screwdrivers and author of “She Conquered” and discuss her trajectory to the successful mobile electronic repair business she has, as well as dissect some excerpts from her book “She Conquered”that she authored with an array of other successful entrepreneurs.

Some would say Toni has it all – she’s a mom, wife, entrepreneur, CEO, author, and speaker, but she remains humble when it comes to all of these things. What I enjoyed most about speaking to Toni was understanding how she balances everything and also the sacrifices she had to make as a working mom, which in her case led to her starting her own business and rejecting the 9-5. Toni’s intention was to show her two daughters and other young girls and women that they not only have the capability to be in tech but excel in tech and not feel like they have to compromise their femininity.

Toni has an amazing book out called “She Conquered” which you can learn more about and purchase by clicking the below image:
I couldn’t start the conversation without asking her if she saw the movie “Hidden Figures” and I couldn’t end the conversation without asking her if she’s living in purpose.

If you’re an Entrepreneur, Business Owner, Interested in STEM or just want some good ol’ inspiration, then this podcast is for you!

#Podbyky Epi 11 Male-Kesi Perspective

imageI will be the first to admit…I don’t understand men. I think I can figure them out, but what’s the point in guessing when I can go directly to the source and get some of my most pending questions answered.

So that’s exactly what I did. On today’s podcast, I am joined by Makesi who answers questions ranging from “Do men suffer from heartbreak” to “Do men want to be approached by woman” Hope you enjoy!

#PodByKy Epi 10 “The Golden Age”

IMG_3908

On today’s podcast I talk to Kayla Brooks about The Golden Age of TV and in our lives. Kayla is a friend of mine from my TV Writing class. She’s one of those people that you know will be a future Show Runner in a few years, kind of like a next generation Shonda Rhimes. At the onset of my most recent quarter life crisis, I explained to her how I was feeling and she totally got it. We start the podcast by addressing the ups and downs of life in our twenties. We move on to talk about how amazing it was to watch our stories in the 90s on television and try to solve the mystery of why our stories have sort of been erased from Hollywood (except the ones that address slavery). The key is to be the change you want to see in the world which is what Kayla and I plan to do.

#Podbyky Epi 9 “Surviving Life After College”

IMG_3799.JPG

On this episode of Lifestylebyky Podcast, I talk to Sharee Hereford, of DormRoom Tv and we chat about our experiences after graduating from college. I remember as soon as I graduated, someone asked me, “So What’s Next?” I was so taken back by the question, primarily because it was my first day back home from college, so my sentiments were can I just  enjoy this moment.

Sheree and I swap stories of the struggle of finding a job, settling for jobs that were not aligned with what we wanted to do, and how all of those opportunities, post college, ultimately leads you to  finding yourself and your purpose.

Feel free to comment below if you relate.

Hope you enjoy.

#Podbyky Epi 8 “Understanding Cultural Appropriation”

IMG_3749.JPG

On this episode of Lifestyle By Ky, I am joined by Kadia, an amazing blogger and lifestyle and culture contributor as well as Myleka an Educator and my best friend and we talk candidly about Cultural Appropriation, the danger of ignoring it, and the excessive use of the N word. The discussion is guided by Jessie Williams speech during the BET awards, where he broke down for us all, why we are sick and tired of people wearing our culture like costumes and not respecting it or us! Hope you enjoy!

Understanding Cultural Appropriation

Appreciation or Appropriation? This week I tackle the issue of Cultural Appropriation and the excessive use of The N word in the black community with my amazing guests Kadia and Myleka. These discussions are important to have because people need to know this is a real issue, it’s deep rooted, and it has some dangerous ramifications.

Why are we mad? Well, there are some people in the world that strip us of our culture, then turn around and profit from our culture (the same culture that they ridicule), and then try to make it their own. The Plunder is real. For example, check out this video that Cosmo just released about “the new trend.”God knows we’ve been wearing braids for years, why is this new? why isn’t a black woman one of the models? We’re mad because we are being erased in a sense, or deemed not good enough to partake in our own culture, especially in main stream media.

To drive the conversation forward, I used Jessie Williams speech from the 2016 BET awards. He said so eloquently :

” We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, yo, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil – black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is though… the thing is that just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real”

I asked my guest the following question, What was one of the most offensive acts of cultural appropriation in pop culture? And now I can actually answer this question for myself and say, the worst occurrence, in my opinion, happened this week, where Melania Trump plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech and then lied about it. Huh? Really? I shot this podcast a week before the Melania Trump scandal, but I am pissed about this. Is this presidential race a joke? Like seriously, why do we have to fight so hard for everything we have, for everything we work so hard to attain, and why are some people so entitled to just take, take, take from us every chance they get?

Anyway, that was just some back story. The podcast is below. Hope you enjoy!!!!

Podcast Revamp All Summer 16 #PodByKy

FullSizeRender-10.jpg

I started a podcast for Lifestyle By Ky around January of this year, just to get some things off my mind and talk it out. The funny thing is most people don’t know my podcast exists, which is what I am seeking to change. This summer, I decided to work on a podcast project of sorts, where I would interview various people on different topics that I cared about. So far I’ve done interviews on “Life After College” “The Reality of Marriage” “The Male Perspective” and “The Golden Age of TV and Life” just to name a few things and the best part is starting this week and every week after for the rest of the summer and fall you will be able to hear it too.

So a few things before becoming a listener  of Lifestylebyky Podcast that I want to be totally honest about:

1.) My voice is absolutely ANNOYING!  Brace Yourselves!

2.) My laugh is more annoying than my voice, something I never knew!

3.) I’ve gotten the question a lot lately, what’s your podcast about? Man I don’t know, whatever I feel like talking about when I wake up for the day.

4.) My podcast are very unconventional. I know the standard is to be in a very quiet room, where you can hear a pin drop. But I don’t have time for all of that. Sometimes, topics come to me when I am jogging through prospect park and boom a podcast episode is created, so if you’re anything like me you have to go with the flow as my listener!

5.) My guests definitely are dropping GEMS! Each week gets better and better and better!

6.) What I want from all of this is growth. I want the podcast to evolve eventually, but I have to start somewhere. I want to discover more about me and what I am capable of doing as well.

You can listen to my podcast on my blog Lifestylebyky.com under ThePodcast tab. You can also subscribe to my Soundcloud and listen to it there. It will be on Itunes soon, very soon and another update for that milestone will come shortly.

Happy Listening #PodByKy

Alternative Ways of Networking

NETWORKING.jpgI love people but I can’t bring myself to walk up to someone randomly and introduce myself . Because networking is such an important tool to develop in your career, I had to discover alternative ways of networking where I can meet people and still be true to myself by attending conferences, working for others and social media i.e. Twitter and Facebook groups just to name a few. Check out my latest podcast.

Taylor’d World Podcast

Taylor'd World PodcastTaylor’d World is one of my favorite podcasts. So when Taylor, the host invited me on her show I was overjoyed. My first thought was “Finally”. Taylor and I went to school together, we share the same interests, and we’re both Pisces of course the connection was there. My next? What am I going to say? Ahhhhhh.

My experience on Taylor’d World was nothing short of amazing. The first half was about the beauty of blogging. We discussed the ups and downs of blogging. Some of the ways I get inspiration, and dealing with positive or negative feedback and trolls.

Before going into our second discussion, Taylor played a trivia game with me about one of my favorite shows of all times “Living Single”. I got 1 question wrong grrrr!

The second half was all about getting over break ups. We talked about everything from First Loves to learning how to love yourself. Post break up you have to immediately build yourself back up. Some of the things that I did was travel, dive into different hobbies and interests, and really start to view myself as a catch. His loss not mine.

Enjoy!
